The protests in Egypt against the government of President Hosni Mubarak have caused a rising concern. Americans have been urged to leave “as soon as they can safely do so.” Although Americans are not at fault, they should refrain from going outside their hotels until the situation stabilizes, and look for the soonest flight out of Egypt..
The Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Janice L. Jacobs, explains that “the U.S. government would provide charters from Cairo and other Egyptian locations as needed. Passengers will have to reimburse the cost of the flights and make their own onward travel plans.” She adds that, “the evacuation flights could involve "several thousand" of an estimated 52,000 Americans in Egypt.” Of course flight reservations should be checked first before having to pay for a charter, but it is a timely and safe option.
