Say good bye to historic Boeing Plant 2

1/7/11

The historic Boeing Plant 2, built in 1936 in south Seattle, has been a huge part of the making of several World War II Aircraft. Aircraft manufactured at the historic plant included the first large swept-wing jet named B-47.  The factory is also home to the B-52 bomber, which the Air Force is still using after six decades. Later, the plant was used to develop the 737, which is now Boeing’s best-selling jetliner.

Due to the ever changing technologies and need for a bigger facility, this plant has become used more for a storage and research facility for the military. "Under an agreement with the state and federal governments and Indian tribes, Boeing will tear down the nearly empty factory to restore more than a half-mile of the Duwamish and create nearly 5 acres of wetlands. Demolition should begin this fall," Boeing spokeswoman Kathleen Spicer said.

There is hope that some part of the facility will be preserved.
